     Our Campers Speak

Your camp has helped me to become alive again after 20 years in the business! . . . . .
Fiddling Orchestra -- EXCELLENT! I am still tingling at how much I was able to grasp by just using my ears! Then, having the music to look at afterwards was great b/c I can continue to work on these "tunes". This single activity in your camp has inspired me to do more of this kind of teaching with my own students. (I have to be honest. If I would have seen the music before I attempted to play these tunes by ear, I would have never tried to play it...it looks too hard. Julie was an incredible force at getting everyone to get the feel of the music, stylistically, by just listening and trying.)
CB - Elementary School Music teacher
Thank you again for organizing this camp. Though it was a bit much for our eleven year old, she still got a lot out of it. As I mentioned to you after the concert, it was the first time I ever saw her smile while playing. We're already planning for her to attend next year.
LH - Student's Mother
It was great! I loved getting to play different styles of music and trying out new techniques and ideas. I also met a lot of new people and got to know some friends from TRYPO even better. I got over my fear of improvising and it was great to know that it didn't matter if you made a mistake or hit a wrong note.
CS - student, age 15
I have been going to workshops, clinics and camps for 30 years and I never, ever, EVER went to anything like this! . . . .
The need for this kind of camp has been growing and this first attempt was done SO WELL! There is NO doubt in my mind that we have turned a corner in our quest to help classical string players and string teachers learn how to play and even teach jazz and that this year's camp will be remembered many years from now as "the first" really successful attempt in this movement! . . .
JFR - Clinician and School Orchestra Director
I went to Roy's jazz and fiddle camp last week! It was SO much fun! One of the coolest things for me was how everyone - clinicians and participants - provided a blanket of support, and there was no feeling of competition. As a brand new jazz player, I needed an environment where I felt comfortable falling flat on my face, and I definitely felt safe doing that there. (Ironically, when you're comfortable with messing up, you actually do a lot better...)
The camp was a perfect mix of young, old, students, and teachers. As a teacher, one of the most important concepts I took from this camp, was using *divergent thinking* in everything you do (thank you, Martin!). You don't have to be playing a jazz piece in order to be creative with it. You can be playing or teaching Suzuki books or Mozart and be just as creative and play just as many games with it.
Thanks again, Roy, Steven, Julie, Martin and Jan! - I look forward to next year's camp!! It will be neat seeing everybody's progress after a year.
CK - Middle School String Teacher
Dear Mr. Sonne,
Thank you once again for organizing the Jazz Camp. I can't tell you how thrilling it was to both learn from and listen to the various musical styles and ideas of Julie, Martin, Terry, Jim, and yourself. . . . .
As you have peaked my interest for alternative violin styles, I am very interested in pursuing these genres in addition to my current classical training. Therefore, I was wondering if you might have any suggestions for other Jazz violin/ alternative violin style camps and programs throughout the nation/ world that I might be able to apply for.
NH - Violin performance major at Indiana University, Bloomington

Dear Roy,
L---- has improved her improvisation skills so much! She played seven songs along with our contemporary band at church this past Sunday. L---- did not follow the melody lines as she would have done in the past but improvised completely. She was great! L---- was a little unsure of herself during the practice the previous week, however when I told her how great she sounded and that she should play out - she did. I am so proud of her. Thank you for all of your efforts and helping L---- to "think outside of the box."
